SHOUT
Free
Shout (powered by the charity Mental Health Innovations) is a vital national digital crisis intervention service. The organization bridges the gap between traditional telephone voice helplines—which can feel exposing or difficult to use in public or unsafe home environments—and immediate, silent mental health support. Operating entirely via text message, the service is free, completely confidential, and structured to never show up on standard UK mobile network bills. When a user text messages the word "SHOUT" to 85258, they are triaged by a smart system that prioritizes high-risk texters before placing them into a direct conversation with a trained Crisis Volunteer. Supported in real-time by qualified clinical supervisors, these volunteers use active listening and collaborative problem-solving to guide individuals from a "hot," overwhelming emotional moment down to a cool, manageable state of calm. The conversation focuses heavily on immediate safety, concluding only when a custom action plan has been established and tailored digital support resources have been shared
